Alina Kontareva is a senior researcher in the Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Society research group at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG). Her work explores the internet industry, mainly focusing on online platform companies, their competitive strategies, platform alternatives, and national policies. Alina earned her doctoral degree in Innovation Studies from the TIK-Centre for Technology, Innovation, and Culture at the University of Oslo. Her dissertation investigated the Russian internet scene and how online platforms can emerge outside major economies like China and the U.S. She has held international fellowships, including as a Fulbright fellow at the University of California, Davis, and as a visiting doctoral student with the “Wisconsin Russia Project” at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Currently, she is part of the EU Horizon project “INCA: Increase Corporate Political Responsibility and Accountability,” where she examines the impacts of online platforms on European economies and societies.
