Alina Kontareva's Visiting Fellowship

Visiting Fellowship Program

In February, joined us for a Visiting Fellowship at The Hague Program on International Cyber Security at Leiden University's The Hague Campus. We sat down with her to hear about her fellowship experience.

Why were you interested in coming here?

My research explores how internet companies—especially online platforms like Amazon, Facebook, and Google—shape our economy and society. These platforms have become essential infrastructure, but their growing dominance, particularly by US-based firms, raises global policy concerns. Initially, I focused my research on strategy in network markets, but my work has expanded to examine the intersection of platforms, political economy, and international relations. The Hague Program on International Cyber Security provided a great space to exchange ideas about geopolitical challenges of Internet governance, particularly economic security issues.

What did you work on during the fellowship?

During my time at The Hague Program, I had the opportunity to present my research on how India, Russia, and China are attempting to develop national alternatives to the Android operating system. Beyond the technical and strategic hurdles, these efforts are driven by different national security priorities—whether to secure economic control or establish backup domestic infrastructure. The fellowship was an excellent opportunity to share my work and to learn more about the intersection of economic and political security.

What’s next for you?

I plan to finalize my article on Android alternatives and submit it for a special issue in May. Additionally, I am continuing my research on platform alternatives and preparing to interview European platform companies in social media, news, and communication. These interviews will provide insights into the future of the European platform landscape. I truly believe we can stay connected with the Hague Program, as there are many cross-disciplinary topics to explore regarding technological competition and innovation.
