Samar Abbas Nawaz' Visiting Fellowship
In September, Samar Abbas Nawaz joined us for a Visiting Fellowship at The Hague Program on International Cyber Security at Leiden University's The Hague Campus. We sat down with him to hear about his fellowship experience.
Why were you interested in coming here?
The Hague Program on International Cybersecurity consists of some of the leading experts in the field of cybersecurity governance. Considering their work and goal to connect academia and policymakers, I was eager to be in that environment. I also wanted to use the knowledge gained during the fellowship into my own research on the regulation of smart civil drones within the EU.
What did you work on during the fellowship?
I presented my PhD project through a seminar and got extremely valuable feedback from the participants. During the fellowship, I did not only interact with the members of The Hague Program but also the researchers working in the broader cybersecurity governance research group at FGGA—it was a overall a great experience. On the networking front, I was able to connect with other relevant institutes around The Hague. Lastly, I also worked on a potential op-ed that covers the impact of safety and security convergence for current EU drone rules.
What’s next for you?
Currently, my top priority is to submit my PhD soon. Also, the fellowship has inspired me to actively engage with cybersecurity regulation of emerging technologies—I will be focusing more in this area!
