Introducing Fabio Cristiano, our new post-doctoral researcher

New researcher

Fabio Cristiano will join The Hague Program on Cyber Norms at Leiden University - Institute of Security and Global Affairs as a postdoctoral researcher in January 2020. His research lies at the intersections of international relations theory and critical security studies with cybersecurity and warfare.

His current research explores the role played by artificial autonomous agents in articulating norms of sovereignty through knowledge-based approaches to the algorithmic securitization of cyberspace. Other areas of interest are blockchain technologies, internet governance, and digital rights. Fabio has published on a wide array of topics, such as national cybersecurity policies, cyberwar game simulations, internet access as human right, augmented reality videogames, cyborg theory, aesthetics by algorithms, and more.

Prior to joining the Program, Fabio was based in the Department of Political Science at Lund University where he wrote his dissertation titled ‘Genealogy of a Cyber Dystopia – Cybersecurity, warfare, and other mixed realities in Palestine’ and convened courses on international relations theory, security studies, AI ethics, and digital pedagogy for students and teaching staff across the University. When he is not in the office, you’ll probably find him reading sci-fi literature, despairing over the poor performances of his favorite football team, or updating the Wikipedia pages of little-known historical figures. Fabio has finally joined Twitter and will start tweeting soon @cristiano_fab.
